Years ago, you probably spent an entire summer trying to beat the original Super Mario Bros. on Nintendo.
Watching someone clear the entire game faster than it took you to get out of the first world –– well, that can be fun and painful to watch all at the same time.
Over time, cream-of-the-crop players, through sweat and dedication, have found incredible ways to conquer vintage Nintendo titles in really quick fashion. They then post the videos of their feats online, creating a whole new YouTube genre of so-called “speed runs.”
Here are some of our favorite clips of people beating old Nintendo games in less time than it takes you to eat lunch. Enjoy, and try not to mourn over your lost summers attempting to conquer Zelda.
1. Super Mario Bros.
We begin with a Nintendo game that just got hit with a new speed run world record, Super Mario Bros. We probably don’t have to explain to you Millennials and Gen Xers how super the Warp Zone trick that aided in this record-beating video is. But even with the help of that level-skipping cheat, besting the entire game in 4:57.69 took more practice than you were ever willing to put in, no doubt.
2. Donkey Kong
One minute and 53 seconds is probably less time than it took for you to read the entire text in this article, but one gamer managed to beat Donkey Kong from Nintendo’s Donkey Kong Classics game in exactly that duration. Whew.
3. Friday the 13th
In a scary-fast time of 3 minutes and 3 seconds, this video shows a slicing and dicing of the NES version of the popular 1980s horror film Friday the 13th.
4. The Legend of Zelda
Nothing short of a legendary performance here. This gamer blasts through the 1986 Legend of Zelda Nintendo game in 34 minutes and change.
5. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
When the heroes in a half shell hit Nintendo the first time, it wasn’t quite the smash hit that Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Arcade Game would become. Nevertheless, this video showing a gamer smash the whole thing in 25 minutes is quite impressive. Yes, 25 minutes, also known as more time than we would probably spend sitting and watching Michael Bay’s upcoming TMNT movie.
6. Mega Man
In this heck of a speed run, you can watch NES’s original Mega Man get beaten in a shade under 23 minutes.
7. Mike Tyson’s Punch-Out!!
You may think you’re tough, but have you ever punched out the all-time most popular 8-bit boxing game in under 17 minutes?
Vampires are all the rage with the kids now, right? Watch the original vampire slayer game get whipped here in about 13 minutes.
9. Maniac Mansion
This gamer traveled all the way through one of Nintendo’s early RPG games, the very wacky Maniac Mansion, in an impressive sub-7-minute run. What a … maniac.
10. Super Mario Bros. 3
And in more Super (speedy) Mario fun, this quick gamer blew through arguably the best NES game ever made in a scorching Red Flower fireball time of 10 minutes and 48 seconds.
