You’ve GOT to See This Woman Rap Fashion Show Reviews

Hip-hop and fashion have always gone hand in hand, and the Instagram account @hats_and_raps is adding another chapter to the storied love affair between the two. The account is run by Sophie Roche Conti, a partner and vice president of public relations at Catherine Miran New York. When she’s not busy promoting French fashion and accessory brands, she’s writing fashion show reviews. And by writing, we mean rapping.

So far, Conti has recorded three of her rhymes, reviewing the collections of Gucci, Versace, and fashion insider favorite Vetements. “You make boots/ they go up to my vagina/ they cost as much as my grandmother’s china/ jumpsuits made from velour/ somehow you manage to call it couture,” she raps about the French fashion label’s spring 2017 effort.

Conti says she got the idea to publish her raps on the encouragement of her friend Benjamin Seidler, a designer and illustrator. “He’d seen one of my raps before, and he was like, ‘You should really get them out there.’ It kind of just happened naturally that it makes sense to do fashion show reviews,” Conti told Yahoo Style over the phone. “There’s all of these amazing writers out there. You have Vanessa Friedman, Nicole [Phelps], Suzy [Menkes], and all of the greats. I figured it would be a really fun, edited way to take all of this information that’s out there and do a review that’s just fun to watch but edited down. I want reviews to be legitimate.”

You can tell by her rhymes that Conti, who counts Drake and Kendrick Lamar among her favorite rappers, knows her stuff — which is, of course, on purpose. Conti says her raps are largely prewritten, though sometimes she tosses in a bit of freestyle. “I want to do the designer justice; it wouldn’t be fair to expect a designer to spend time toiling over a collection and have me review it without a bit of thought and analysis,” she explained. “I like to throw in a little spice to keep it funky, but, lyrically, it’s a legitimate review.”

As for the hats? Conti says they help her get into character. “Hat time means rap time!” she told us. Conti rocks a blue Outdoor Voices hat with the words “Doing Things” emblazoned across the front in the first three videos, though she mentioned that she may switch up her hat swag for future rhymes.
