Woman’s Post Mocking Trump’s ‘Tiny Hands’ Goes Viral
A tweet featuring a 79-year-old grandmother’s Facebook post about President-elect Donald Trump has gone viral.
Elsie Hay Cook, of Houston, Texas, recently posted a photo in the Facebook group Addicted to Knitting of the 18 “pussy hats” she’s knitted in the past month for people attending the upcoming Women’s March in Washington, D.C. She also attached a photo of her grandson wearing a pink hat she made in the group, which contains almost 40,000 members.
After receiving flak from commentators in the nonpartisan group who suggested that she shouldn’t be posting content with political connotations, and even some who questioned why she would dress her grandson in the color, she decided to post another image.
“One person on the site accused me of child abuse for forcing my grandson to wear it,” Cook told Buzzfeed News. “I guess that’s what made me do the next post,” she said.
The retired schoolteacher then posted an image of tiny mittens in the group, captioning the shot, “I just finished these gloves for the president-elect to wear for his inauguration. Do they make a Priority Mail container in Size Tiny?” Although she did not create the mittens pictured, she said that she “simply could not resist” posting the image, which is an obvious reference to the insults and comments that have surrounded our nation’s president-elect in the past regarding the size of his hands.
Twitter user francesca_crit took a screenshot of the post and reposted it to Twitter, where it has since gone viral, reaching almost 30,000 retweets and 90,000 likes.
Many users found the post humorous and commented on it on Twitter. “That’s actually funny! Great burn grandma!” user Kitarya wrote. “The knitting fb group I am in has descended into chaos over pussy hats. I should join this one instead,” another user, Hannah, wrote.
Cook never expected such a reaction to her post, telling Buzzfeed, “I never dreamed I would have caused all this stink.”
Despite her newfound Internet fame, the grandmother hasn’t tuned in to social media that much. “I’m still knitting pussy hats,” she told Buzzfeed, “so I don’t have time to fool with it too much.”
