This Is How Willow Smith Does Low-Key Festival Fashion

It’s hard to believe that Willow Smith is only 16 years old, let alone that it’s been almost seven years since “Whip My Hair” could be heard blasting out of car radios. The young feminist, actress, and singer-songwriter (the list goes on) has been steadily honing her creative practice for years, and in that time, she’s reached impressive sartorial heights: Vogue Contributing Editor André Leon Talley honored Willow and her similarly chic brother Jaden at last year’s Met Gala, proclaiming them to be on the “cutting edge of fashion.”

Yet Smith’s onstage look at this weekend’s Afropunk Festival in London was, in contrast to Talley’s assertion, surprisingly down-to-earth. Wearing a pair of cutoff blue pants (the raw hem made them somewhat trendier than they would have been otherwise) and a simple graphic tee, Willow added a bit of Pacific Northwest grunge spirit with a loose, oversize blue flannel and humble black Converse high-tops. And while this may sound like a relatively nondescript outfit that any indie frontman could pull off, Willow elevated it with a pop of greenish-blue eye shadow spread across one lid and long braids tied in a bow on top of her head—proof that there are still ways to put an innovative spin on laid-back style.
