Welcome to spring, the season of allergies, khaki trench coats, and renewal. Renewal of great television, that is. VH1 announced Thursday which of its shows would get yet another season and, praise heavens, RuPaul's Drag Race is among them. The 10th season of the popular reality competition will air in March of 2018. A press release for the show describes the 10th season premiere as "the biggest eleganza extravaganza ever."
For fans of the show this is both good news and bad news. The good news is: There's a new season of the show at hand. The bad news is: Not until March 2018, folks. (For those who can't do math, that's almost a year from now.)
Everything seems to be coming up roses for RuPaul, née RuPaul Andre Charles, the creator and host of the show. In March, the 56-year-old married his longterm partner Georges LeBar and Deadline announced that the star would executive produce a scripted reality series about his life in New York City in the '80s. The series will feature RuPaul's "rise from club kid to drag queen, gay icon, and global star." Also in 2016, Charles won his first Emmy for the series — the host earned a statuette for Outstanding Host for a Reality or Reality-Competition Program.
The glitter atop all this is that RuPaul's Drag Race simply couldn't be doing better. The show, a cult favorite for all of its 9 seasons, entered mainstream waters this year when it hopped from its original network Logo to VH1. The 9th season premiered on February 2, 2017 on the network.
Drag Race aside, VH1 also renewed the Tyra Banks (formerly Rita Ora) vehicle America's Next Top Model, Martha & Snoop’s Potluck Dinner Party, Love & Hip Hop: Hollywood, Dear Mama, and Basketball Wives, as per Entertainment Weekly.
And wait — there's more. VH1 will premiere a Ricky Martin docuseries in June of 2017. The as-of-yet untitled show is described as a “never been seen account of one of the most private and guarded global superstars of our time."
There you have it. Two more reasons to flip to VH1 in the coming year.
Like what you see? How about some more R29 goodness, right here?
