Seriously? These Fancy Hotels Now Offer Glamorous Camping

Glamping, that blend of luxury and camping, has caught on strong with travelers who want to have their cake and eat it, too, in such rustic locales as a safari lodge. But some upscale U.S. hotels are incorporating glamping into their services as well, offering the equivalent of having your cake, eating it, too — and then having another cake.

So if your idea of an outdoor getaway is sipping on a fresh cocktail by the beach while watching TV and lying on a fancy couch with your phone by your side and your concierge at arm’s length, you’re in luck! These hotels are going to great lengths to give you a memorable glamping experience.

There would be no way to top camping in Central Park — if only it were legal. But you can camp above the park in serious luxury, for the cost of a small car. Simply book AKA’s 17th-floor penthouse suite that comes with an outdoor bedroom on the 1,000-square-foot wraparound terrace. With such a killer view of Manhattan, you may have a tough time closing your eyes to sleep on your queen-size bed with wood-burning fireplace.

Cost: The catch is that you’ll have to book the suite for an entire week, and that comes out to $11,595 (not including taxes). But hey, did you look at that view?

Located in the Finger Lakes region, this destination takes you outside the city with plenty of opportunities for exercise. And gasp, there’s no electricity in your room! But the hotel’s collaboration with Firelight Camps ensures you’ll get spoiled rotten here, too—witness the safari tent with hardwood floors, queen- or king-size bed with 300-thread-count linens, covered porch, and battery-powered lanterns to keep the dark away. And your phone won’t have a chance of losing its juice with a charging station on the premises. There’s a sauna nearby where you can kick back in between hikes around the waterfalls.

Cost: Rates start at $155 per night.

Because who doesn’t think of roughing it when they think of the Ritz-Carlton? This one’s a kids-only glamping perk: Families staying in one of the hotel’s executive suites can let their child sleep in a fancy tent containing a double featherbed, accompanied by a lantern, children’s book, stuffed animal, and s’mores-themed pastry. So, yeah, it’s not quite survival training for your young one, but we can call it a gold-plated start.

Cost: The tent package costs $75, and executive suites go for around $500 per night on the weekend.

Although it’s in a major city, the Houstonian does offer some relief from the hustle and bustle in an 18-acre wooded area. As for the service, it’s full-on luxury, but you can give your kid the illusion of camping with the “Kids Camp Out” package. Much like the Ritz-Carlton package, it lets your child sleep in your room in a tent. The deal includes a stuffed raccoon, a sleeping bag, a lantern, glow-in-the-dark stars, and a free dinner from the Campfire Menu.

Cost: The camping package, plus deluxe guestroom, goes for $369 per night.
