The Tucked-In T-Shirt Is Coming Back

By Max Berlinger.

When the weather gets warmer and the layers start slowing coming off, a difficult proposition arises: how do you look put together without getting overheated? Welcome back the tucked-in T-shirt. The style move you haven't used since your mom made you do it in third grade (or the that your dad is still doing) is being adopted by some leading style rebels right now, which means it's only a matter of time before we see it on average Joes too. And the most impressive thing about it is how versatile it actually is.

Just look at Milo Ventimiglia, the star of the hit TV weeper This Is Us, who walked the red carpet at the Tribeca Film Festival using the tucked-in method to dress up his casual layers. He paired a long-sleeve striped T-shirt with a pair of dark pants and heavy boots. Ventimiglia didn't do the full tuck, instead opting for the more subtle half-tuck in front. It pulled the look together (like there was more forethought than if it was just a tee and pants) and prominently displayed his belt buckle. This is one of those looks better for guys who've been hitting the gym or just don't have a slim frame — the long sleeve and tonal blue-on-blue helps make this something that will look on most guys.

Devendra Banhart also tried the tucked-in method at — where else? — Coachella this weekend. Banhart went for the edgier version of the trick, by tucking his entire shirt—one with a everyone-can-support message of peace—into high-waisted khaki pants. This is certainly a look to try if you're a leaner, taller guy and aren't as afraid of taking on a swerve, or don't mind getting a few once overs from your friends. (Not crazy, just slightly more advanced.)

And then there's the ultimate Cool™ approved way of wearing it, which is tucked into jeans and worn with a pair of casual kicks. It's so damn cool that's it's been worn by the curator of cool, Off-White's Virgil Abloh. The key here is the nice high contrast of the white shirt against dark pants, the double sleeve roll (start doing those push-ups) and the fact that he uses a plain white tee and plain pants — the tuck is the real star of this simple outfit.

There you go, guys, no matter your style, there's a T-shirt tuck for you.
