The shows are still raging on in Europe, but aside from the predominance of pink and pinstripes, one of the big trends that we’ve noticed off the runway is the prevalence of septum piercing. While celebrities like Rihanna, Scarlett Johannson and newcomer FKA Twigs have been spotted on and off the red carpet with special accessory, it has now carried over into the fashion pack.

“I actually had my septum pierced in high school, but I was really afraid of what people might say so I would tuck it in,” social media sensation Aimee Song told Yahoo Style. “Since my nose is so small it always looked like I had boogers.” The blogger said that she re-pierced the spot, “about a year and a half ago before the whole ‘trendy’ thing started. I remember seeing a red carpet image of either Rihanna or Zoe Kravitz wearing one and I thought it was so hot.”

Scott Studenberg, one-half of the design duo behind Baja East balked when we asked if his was real or fake. “I don’t do fake,” he said with a laugh. “[I did it because] I love experimenting with my look—tattoos, clothing, hair—and wanted to give a thin rose gold septum hoop a chance.”

During New York Fashion Week, even Vogue’s affluent style editor at large, Elizabeth von Thurn und Taxis got into the accessory. She wore different versions of the piece everyday and then photographed them for the site. (And according to Instagram, she got a blessing from Karl Lagerfeld as well.)

So why now?  “In the past 6-12 months there has been an increase in septum piercings compared to years past,” says Maria Tash whose piercing and jewelry emporium, Venus by Maria Tash, has assisted Johnasson, Kravitz, and Victoria’s Secret models in their quests for a new facial accessory. “We have more of a demand for that piercing and we have also noticed more people are interested in investing in beautiful jewelry instead of getting the piecing and hiding it with a retainer (to show occasionally), which has long been the case.”

If you’re thinking of getting your septum pierced, Tash says that it is easy to maintain. “It is pretty easy piercing to take care of, due to the location, and how thin the tissue is. Clients should clean twice a day with a sterile wound wash saline.” And as for the pain? “That is always subjective, and can also be traced to the skill of the piercer and the quality of the piercing tools,” she says. “But, if I had to rank them, I would say, from least to most painful: earlobe, septum, then navel. Getting your septum pierced makes your eyes tear up.”

So would you want to well up in the name of fashion? It all depends how badly you want to switch up your look. Piercings are about individual style after all. As Studenberg points out, “whatever you get you need to love, love, love and feel good about. Confidence is the sexiest accessory.” Song concurs, “I’ve always had that ‘good girl’ image and I wanted to bit more edge. Some people hate it, some people love it, but I like it.”
