This Year’s Best-Selling Halloween Costumes Are Cozy, Lazy

Forget about getting creative for Halloween: This year’s top-selling costumes are all about being comfortable (and lazy).

Three weeks shy of All Hallows’ Eve, online marketplace eBay has released a list of its 10 best-selling costumes. And to be honest… they’re kind of lame. What happened to dressing up scary, or getting a little creative, or even being a bit cheeky? Perhaps we should ask Cara Delevingne.

The top Halloween seller for 2015 are Japanese Kigurumi cosplay costumes—which are literally just oversized footie pajamas made to resemble animals or cartoon characters, with hoods that often have ears on them. You know, the kind that Delevingne used to run around (and nap) in all the time.

I guess the upside to wearing one of these on Halloween is that, at the end of the night, you can just curl up and go to sleep without having to scrub off any face paint or fake eyelashes. Plus, you don’t have to worry about getting pregnant with a food baby after eating all those mini Kit Kats. But still. It’s barely better than wearing a tee that says “This Is My Halloween Costume.” Poor effort.

Next are Mario and Luigi costumes, specifically those made for children. Serious question: Do kids today even know who the Super Mario Brothers are? I honestly don’t know the answer. More serious question: If Luigi is a Mario brother, is Mario’s full name Mario Mario? I’m waiting.

In third place, we have something called the “Mal Isle of the Lost” costume, from Disney’s TV movie Descendants—which does not star George Clooney and Shailene Woodley, nor does it take place in Hawaii. It’s actually a fantasy about the next generation of Disney characters, and according to the Internet, Mal Isle of the Lost is the daughter of Sleeping Beauty villain Maleficent. So now, when you see a ton of little girls running around in purple wigs and colorful catsuits with shoulder pads… you’ll kind of get it.

The fourth most popular “costumes”—tight biking shirts that are printed to look like super hero outfits—are nearly as lazy as the first. Though you do have to be pretty fit to pull it off, so if you’re wearing one of these, you’ve got to commit to not mowing down on too much candy. It’s a tough call.

Rounding out the top five is a costume that I frankly can’t even believe people are still purchasing: It’s an adult-size Hogwarts school robe, like the ones worn by Harry Potter et al. Come on, guys. The last Harry Potter movie came out FOUR YEARS AGO. You might as well be dressing up as Sarah Palin (and you just know some people will.)

If you really, really feel the need to be dressing up as Hermione, because… IDK, maybe you and your friends have been taking turns since 2001 and now it’s finally your turn—can’t you just borrow one from someone you know? Or just wait until next year and wear some kind of Fantastic Beasts themed costume? Ughghgh.
