The Queen’s Cutest Accessories? Her Corgis.
Sure, the Queen’s hats are cool. But her cutest accessory? Her corgis. Ever since she was gifted her first Pembroke Welsh Corgi named Dookie at the age of 7, she’s kept the breed as her constant companions.
Like many canine pals offer their owners, the royal receives unconditional and unlimited love from the dwarf dogs. As any public figure knows, trusting new people isn’t easy, but a pet’s love is pure. Vanity Fair reports in the August issue of the magazine in an exposé of the monarch’s relationship with her dogs called “Queen Elizabeth and Her Corgis: A Love Story” that she even feeds them herself and takes them on daily walks, which is therapeutic (her husband, Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, calls it her “dog mechanism”).

“My corgis are family,” the Queen once said. In fact, the association between Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and corgis is so interconnected that the palace sold plush corgis in the gift shop. About a dozen corgis, not the Queen’s, made cameos at the opening ceremony of the London Olympics in 2012 alongside James Bond.
Since the 1950s, corgi breeding has taken place on the grounds of Windsor Castle, but reports indicate that has come to an end. And, sadly, at age 89, the Queen’s down to only two — she reportedly owned 30 at one point — named Holly and Willow and they recently turned 12 (their average lifespan is about 12 to 13 years).
“No world leader has been as widely identified with a particular animal as Elizabeth II with her corgis,” Michael Josehph Gross writes. It can also be said that no one has spurred as many BuzzFeed lists, GIFs, or Internet fanatics.
Love, as we once knew it, is dead. Woof.
