The Olsen Twins Sat on the Floor to Watch Their Own Runway Show

The Row’s runway show is always a hot ticket. Not only do editors and buyers love the label’s luxurious separates, but seeing them in New York is now a rare event, since the brand sometimes shows in Paris, where many of its best customers reside. Of course, the other reasons for the excitement around The Row are Ashley and Mary-Kate Olsen, the enigmatic moguls-slash-style-icons whose presence excites even the most jaded fashion types. Star power’s a hell of a drug.

And while other star designers might, oh let’s say, walk in their own runway show, (looking at you, Rihanna), or step out at the end for a sheepish bow, the Olsens went their own way, as they’re wont to do. Today, at their Fall/Winter 2016 runway show in New York, the designers watched the show while perched on the floor. A who’s-who of fashion’s power players were arrayed comfortably on couches, but the Olsens seemed perfectly content to watch intently from the floor, dressed in black layers and clutching coffee cups (sadly, not the Venti Starbucks cups of our beloved NYU-era Olsens).

The label didn’t break any new ground today, exactly — it was the same sea of camel layers, oversized duster coats, perfectly slouchy trousers, and covetable leather bags The Row’s been working for several seasons. But for women with a taste for the kind of low-key luxe basics Céline used to be known for, and the means to buy the very best quality, The Row hits its mark every time.

If The Row’s clothes are power dressing masquerading as minimalism, the Olsens sitting on the floor is a sleight of hand, too — a humble stance that belies their total mastery of their market. The Row’s on top, even if its designers are perched on the carpet.

Up close, The Row’s knits have a sumptuous heft that makes it clear why they’re so coveted.

They can be slouchy and double-breasted, or nipped-in at the waist with narrow lapels, but one thing is clear: in The Row’s world, thou shalt own a duster coat, and it shall be some tone of tawny beige.

The final walk was a sea of camel.
