The ‘Empire' Cookie Smackdown Is Here!

Baking is such a polite, innocent activity. Measuring all your ingredients, eating a little dough from the bowl, setting the temperature to 350°F. Who doesn’t love a nice doughy something, warm and fragrant right from the oven?
We can think of one person, albeit fictional — Cookie Lyon from the Fox hip-hop drama “Empire.” There’s only room for one fresh cookie in her life, and it’s her.
Without a doubt, Cookie has become America’s favorite television mom. She’s as maternal as they come, but that does not translate to the kitchen. The fiercely protective matriarch is the last person you’ll see reading the back of a Toll House chocolate chip bag. You’re more likely to see her pull a gun on someone who threatened her sons, stomp on a bad guy’s throat with her well-shod foot, or put an enemy firmly in his or her place. “Just ‘cause I asked Jesus to forgive you don’t mean I do,” she growled at one of them.
But who says baking has to be so sedate? Inspired by Cookie and her constant battles, Yahoo Food is launching the “Empire” Cookie Smackdown. Each week, we’ll pit two recipes against each other and you can vote on which sweet treat deserves to be the winner. Help pick the baddest baked good around. If you’re inspired to do a little baking, that’s great. Take a picture and tag it #empirecookiesmackdown. Cookie won’t care, but we will.
To kick off this confection competition, we have two cookies from women who, like our beloved Cookie, are fierce. Singer and cookbook author Kelis offers up a chocolate chip cookie covered with sea salt and potato chips from her new cookbook “My Life on a Plate: Recipes from Around the World.” She is going head-to-head with “Master Chef” judge and cookbook author Christina Tosi’s Citrus Cookies, from “Milk Bar Life.”
