Where did everyone at MBFW Tbilisi find all their stylish goods? Two guesses: Matériel and Dots. These are two Tbilisi-based concept stores that are also sister brands. They operate under the Fashion House Materia in Tbilisi, Georgia.
Founded in 1969, the Fashion House Materia is one of the oldest fashion manufacturers and retailers based in Georgia, whose company history spans over 60 years. Fortunately, Materia is able to handle all its production and manufacturing needs in house in its Tbilisi factory. The company does not believe in outsourcing and has made a point of nurturing home-grown talent, working with local designers for decades. Over time, Materia saw a market for a luxury sector of its fashion house and launched the brand and concept store Matériel.
Three Georgian designers, Lika Chitaia, Aleksandre Akhalkatsishvili, and Lado Bokuchava, now create seasonal collections for Matériel presented at its showroom and sold in its store.
The collections have a stylish modernism comparable to luxury brands like Céline, the Row, and J.W. Anderson, but the pieces are tailored with a dark, edgy Georgian twist. A favorite from Lado Bokuchava’s collection is a pair of black leather mules with an unexpected rainbow-colored sole and a triangular block heel. Each collection is a small, curated selection of fashionable offerings that speak to each designer’s inspirations for the season.

Dots is a new contemporary brand and concept store, right next door to Matériel, created by the Fashion House Materia earlier this year. It is dedicated to working with local, young Georgian designers to produce beautifully crafted, innovative, stylish clothing at a much more affordable price point.
As punctilious as Dots is about the design of its products, it is equally as thoughtful about the design and aesthetic of the stores, which are located in Tbilisi and the Hilton Hotel Batumi, in the Adjara region. The Georgian architect George Mosulishvili designed the Tbilisi-based concept store. He helped preserve the historical integrity of the building, but gave it a modern, clean finish synonymous with the brand’s aesthetic. The store features a much wider assortment of ready-to-wear, shoes, bags, and accessories than Matériel’s tighter, curated high-end collection.
