Target Forced to Pull Batgirl Shirts From Shelves

Target Australia has been selling T-shirts for little girls with a to-do list for Batgirl that includes dry-cleaning and washing the Batmobile — before fighting crime and saving the world. After the outcry online complaining that this was sexist, the shirts have been pulled from the shelves.

Target confirmed Wednesday afternoon that it has withdrawn the shirts from sale, after a number of parents lodged complaints on Facebook.

“Target, your Batgirl T-shirt is out of step with 21st Century family values. It is utterly offensive and must be removed,” another posted.

Target responded on Facebook with an apology, promising to remove the shirts.

Other shoppers couldn’t see what all the fuss was about. Target’s decision to pull the T-shirts from the shelves ran into a customer backlash in just a matter of hours. Some parents slammed the company for caving to public pressure.

While the shirts may appear to be harmless fun, like so many other messages girls and young women are subjected to, they perpetuate outdated stereotypes about women.
