Summer Hair Tips from a Hair Expert

Despite tending to the well-groomed tresses of countless celebrities, models, and fashion editors, Jordan M (yep, he just goes by M) believes that ladies should keep it low maintenance when it comes to their hair — especially during the upcoming summer months. “I think you should get a good haircut for the summer right about now, and then not get another one until September,” says Jordan, the refreshingly laid back stylist who works at New York’s Bumble and Bumble salon. “Let it grow out how it wants to. Let it get that beachy, messy feel.” And for you bottled blonds, he thinks you should let mother nature just do her thing. “It’s summer. You are going to be outside so let the sun lighten your hair.”

And for those who can’t stand the sweltering heat and sticky hair clinging to your neck, Jordan warns about chopping it off for this season’s stylish lob look. “To pull it off, you have to have fine hair, clean texture and a little bit wave,” he says. “When you cut coarse, thick hair, it goes out like a Christmas tree, like a triangle.” (We all can’t be blessed with Sienna Miller genes.) And when it comes to rainbow colors, Jordan thinks that most of us should abstain from baby blue hair or shocking pink hues.“Seven-year olds and seventy-year olds are the only people who can really pull off blue hair,” he says. (Hear that Kesha and Madonna?) But at the end of the day, Jordan, who spends his spare time fly fishing, camping, is not interested in bossing his clients around. “I don’t like this idea of stylist telling a client what she should do with her hair. I want her to be happy. ” He does have one piece of advice though: “Don’t cut your hair after you just broke up with your boyfriend. It’s not a tattoo, but it’s close enough.”
