Snow Ice Cream: The Millionth Awesome Thing About Snow Days

Live in the South or on the Eastern Seaboard and haven’t ventured outside yet today? DON’T. It’s the freakin’ tundra out there. Just stay inside with a steaming cup of hot chocolate—unless you don’t have anything sugary in the house. What’s a snow day without an indulgence? Get out there and (safely) bring something sweet home!

Fortunately, you won’t have to trek very far, because that white stuff in your yard is perfect for making ice cream. 

We know what you’re thinking: Why would I eat ice cream when it’s cold outside? First of all, it’s warm inside. Secondly, if you don’t have condensed milk you can actually make your own using pantry staples and whole milk (which we learned today might be good for your waistline; this snow day project is now a matter of health!)

Got cocoa and the stuff for snow ice cream? Good work: You’re a snow day pro. Your own boredom—or that of the kid you’re stuck indoors with—will soon be banished.

Now get to it. 

Snow Day Ice Cream


  • 8 cups snow
  • 1 14-ounce can sweetened condensed milk
  • 1 tsp. vanilla extract

In a bowl, combine snow, condensed milk, and vanilla and mix to combine. Serve immediately. Garnish with whatever candy or chocolate is in the house.
