Bad news: Your favorite pair of skinny jeans might be doing damage to your back.

A new study conducted by the British Chiropractic Association broke down the top five fashion items in your closet that might be hurting your back. And while you might expect high heels to come in at number one, chiropractors actually found that tight jeans are among the clothes that could be most damaging for your back. After skinny jeans, the list included oversized bags, hooded coats, and backless shoes.

Tim Hutchful, a chiropractor at BHA, explained that skinny jeans are a problem because they “restrict free movement in areas such as the hips and knees, affecting the way we hold our bodies.” And as posture is a big contributing factor to back pain, that super-tight denim could easily contribute to issues over time — especially if you wear your skinnies every day.

There is good news, however: Hutchful says you don’t have to completely ditch skinny jeans in an effort to avoid back pain. The chiropractor suggests switching it up with your wardrobe, and alternating between loose pants styles and your ever-so-loved skinny jeans that you can’t stand to say goodbye to. Best of all? Wide-legged pants are totally on trend right now and if you’re looking for options, we’ve got you more than covered.
