Selena Gomez Turned an Ogre’s Silk Sleep Shirt Into a Fancy Dress

Selena Gomez is my new style icon. With the help of stylist Kate Young she’s transformed into a not just a role model for Wizards of Waverly Place fans but a sartorial inspiration for women of all ages. Recently she’s been spotted in a leather Louis Vuitton gown, Miu Miu ensemble, J.W. Anderson minidress, and sheer Dior number. But her latest look didn’t miss the mark, per se, it’s just utterly confusing.

Performing songs from her new album Revival at the London club Annabel’s, the multi-talented star wore a black silk dress from up-and-coming brand Monse, The piece is basically a deconstructed oversized silk pajama top. It’s like she was doing the walk of shame from a fancy ogre’s home and threw this on because she didn’t want to wear her clothes from the night before (she did, after all, change her outfit four times in one day this week). The strapless top consists of arm sleeves tied at the side of her chest with a visible collar, accented with white, poking out. A side slit revealed her legs. Buttons seems to be missing but that’s probably because she ripped them off in the heat of the moment.

Monse is actually designed by Oscar de la Renta alums Laura Kim and Fernando Garcia and has already been seen on fashion royalty including Amal Clooney and Sarah Jessica Parker. A piece recently made its red carpet debut when Jessica Pare stepped out in a pink dress with rosette detail on the bodice at the Emmys. Funny enough, the brand just debuted at New York Fashion Week and therefore hasn’t even hit stores, but it’s already at the top of many wish lists.

Perhaps that has to do with the fact that they know what women want. Take Gomez’s dress for example. Sure it might seem like she created it herself, but the sleeve style is actually everywhere. Alexander Wang first sent a dress down the runway a few years ago which was basically a button down dress with attached sleeves. It was so popular, that now knockoffs are everywhere. In fact, I recently just purchased one from Forever21 for $22.90.

So want to dress just like Selena? Either wait half a decade for fast fashion to copy Monse or find a beanstalk and ask the local giant to borrow a sleep shirt.
