Rihanna’s Puma Ad Is a Total Knockoff of Taylor Swift's 'Style' Music Video
Rihanna’s already conquered the music world with her unique Bahamian vibes and catchy hits. Now, she’s attempting to take over the fashion world as well. Named a brand ambassador and creative director at Puma in December, her months of work with the athletic company is finally coming to light. Her “picks” are highlighted in a special section of the site and includes the brand’s classic sneaker in burgundy and pink; monochrome sweatshirts and sweatpants with the logo; training shoes in ROYGBV; and more. Additionally, she appears in a commercial promoting her curated selections.
Yet, like Johnny Depp’s ad before it, the premise is far from explicit. Seriously, WTF is going on? The 30-second video starts with the camera directly on Rihanna’s chest, showing her wearing a black and gray sports bra. Being @badgalriri, she couldn’t just wear a PWRSHAPE gray and black sports bra ($45), instead she also accessorized the compression top with layers of necklaces. Unfortunately — or, fortunately, for some — instead of panning up to her face (is it even Rihanna? Is it a body double?) her abs come into view, which are embellished with a cross body chain. Then, almost magically, her skin turns into a movie screen and a beach scene projects onto her trunk.
On her shoulders, clouds appear and then an avalanche on a mountain erupts. Shaking out her wrists, she shows off her henna tattoos which seem to be immune from the weird skin disease that I shall name movieyloidosis, which apparently Taylor Swift in her “Style” music video suffered from too because her skin also turned into landscapes and bursting colors of moving images.
Flash to an aerial view of New York City by night on a deltoid, a beach scene on the other, then a concert view across the entire back. Lastly, we’re taken the moon on Rihanna’s chest before finally seeing the “FourFiveSeconds” singer’s face — finally. Not only is she wearing a bra and body chain, but compression shorts beneath baggy sweatpants, a zipper hoodie hanging off her arms, and a backwards hat underneath wavy hair. It end with “Rihanna Trains for Platinum” which is super confusing because did Rihanna have to go the gym to get a platinum record? I don’t think so but could be completely wrong.
