Richard E Grant: why middle aged men should never wear shorts

He was born in Switzerland, wears two watches, and has his own perfume brand. It's safe to say Richard E Grant is better placed than most to comment on matters of style. He is, after all, a professionally raffish man: an actor who has played more witty gentlemen in finery than he probably cares to remember.

This week, Grant cast his withering eye over the most talked-about body part of the week, legs. But while most people were talking about Nicola Sturgeon and Theresa May's pins, Grant levelled things up with an opinion on middle-aged men showing their legs.

In short, it's a no no. In slightly longer:

“They seem to be dressed in toddler wear,” Grant said, speaking at Tuesday's Debrett's Future of Fashion and Etiquette event in Bicester, where he was speaking with Mary Portas. “I think you should still be shaggable: don’t expose your knees over the age of 45 if you want to get laid.”

Harsh? Perhaps – but many would agree with him. While modern style icon Prince George can pull off wearing shorts every day without repelling all and sundry, it's a slightly different story for men of a finer vintage.

With that in mind, then, what are the wardbrobe rules for men of a certain age? If shorts are out, what else is on the banned list? Well, fortunately we have a guide for that. And we're fairly sure it'd be met with Richard E Grant's approval.
