It’s become common practice to give money for weddings, this we know. What we don’t know, and should never really directly ask, is exactly what couples do with the money post-wedding. To keep your curious minds satisfied, we’ve asked real brides to share with us how they spend their cold hard wedding cash. Here's what they had to say!
“Down payment! We were fortunate enough that my family paid for most of the actual wedding, aside from a few thousand dollars of our own. Every gift we got went straight into our bank account and was used for the down payment of our first home six months later. It was a great way to kick off our marriage a bit more financially stable, and it's cool to think there’s a little bit of everyone’s well wishes that went into our home.” –Nicole, 29

“We bought our first house, and it was the best decision we ever made!” –Ganine, 30
“We were boring. We saved the money and used it as part of a down payment for our house. We don’t regret it at all!” –Joy, 39
“My husband and I decided to split the wedding gift money we received in three ways. Saving cash to pay for the wedding led to both of us accruing credit card debt. We each took a third to pay down our debt, and then the other third went into our joint account. Eventually we used the joint account money to furnish our new home.” –Katie, 30
“We used the money here and there for bills, rent, unexpected expenses, etc. We wished we had saved it, either in a savings account or a retirement fund. We ran through it too quickly, with very little to show for it.” –Jennifer, 37
“We put all of our wedding money into savings and saved it for a ‘rainy day.’ Luckily, it’s still there.” –Jenna, 33
“We took a bit of it and brought it with us to our honeymoon for spending money, ungraded, and general travel expenses. We had paid for what we could in full, so it was really nice to know the rest was taken care of , it totally felt like a gift. The rest, we put in savings.” –Amanda, 29
“With my wedding gift money, my husband and I used it to put towards a down payment for our house. We splurged a little bit on our Hawaii honeymoon but as soon as we got back we put it all away in savings and didn't touch it for almost a year, until we found our home. Then we put that money towards the down payment and home renovations including a brand new kitchen.“ –Diandra, 27
