Is coffee your life blood, or does it give you the shakes? If you fall into the first category, you’re in the majority. For most people, a cup of java doesn’t do much to them except give that little extra pick-me-up when you need it most.

But it turns out there is a small percentage of people who just can’t deal with the effects of coffee on their system—we’re talking headaches and abnormal heartbeats.

Yikes.

According to wellness expert and prolific author Dr. Michael Roizen at Cleveland Clinic, your metabolism might be the culprit for this unusual reaction to your morning cup of joe. He described to WJHG exactly what to expect in terms of symptoms if you’re more sensitive.

He said, “If you have a normal cup of coffee that’s filtered, eight ounces, and you have it in an hour, so you drink it within an hour, and you don’t get a headache, you don’t get abnormal heart beats, you don’t get anxiety, you don’t get gastric upset, you’re most likely a fast metabolizer and will get a benefit.”

About 88 percent of folks are fast metabolizers, and therefore reap the benefits from the caffeinated beverage, which include decreasing the risk of Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, Type-2 diabetes, and some forms of cancer.

But the other 12 percent of the population consists of slow metabolizers, which means coffee has so many negative effects, they pretty much outweigh the long term benefits.

But if you’re one of the fast metabolizers, now have another excuse for chugging that delicious coffee.

Just remember, no matter how much you might crave caffeine, you should stop drinking coffee at least 3 hours before your bedtime—otherwise, it might mess with your sleep cycle.
