Puma is revisiting the past this spring, as the Herzogenaurach, Germany-based athletic giant issues a slight update to two of its classic sneaker styles: the Suede and the Basket.

Available now in Puma stores, online and at global retailers, the lifestyle kicks have been improved with the addition of a breathable Eco OrthoLite sockliner to provide an optimal fit while maintaining many of the key elements that have defined the styles for nearly 50 years.

The Suede, first made famous by athletic greats such as 1960s track star Tommie Smith and ’70s basketball legend Walt “Clyde” Frazier, still has its perforated suede upper and stitched rubber outsole. And its sibling sneaker, the Basket, will continue to sport an allover leather upper on a rubber outsole. The shoes typically retail for $65 for the Suede and $70 for the Basket.

Since debuting in 1968, the Suede and Basket have been mainstays for the Puma brand, with a major revival in the 1980s, when they moved from the basketball court to the hip-hop scene.

Today, the brand continues to score with the music crowd.

Puma’s new creative director is Rihanna, who is presenting at New York Fashion Week. And Philadelphia rapper Meek Mill, a brand ambassador, hascollaborated with Puma twice to put his spin on the Suede and the Basket and is often seen sporting the label.
