Plus-Size Old Navy Shopper Turns a Fat Shaming Incident Into a Positive Experience

When Rachel Taylor was shopping at Old Navy on Thursday, she eavesdropped on a mother and daughter’s conversation (no shame). But what she heard wasn’t idle gossip, instead the exchange hurt her personally. “The girl picked up a plus-size tank top, showed it to her mom and said, “Look! Me and So-and-so can fit in this tank top!” the Louisiana-based wedding photographer shared. “Her mom laughed and said, “Yeah, you could! That thing is huge!””
As it turned out, the item the pair were ridiculing in earshot of Taylor was in her size. “I couldn’t help it; I started crying. I guess the girl and her mom walked away. I have no idea. My husband walked me out of the store to the car. I sat in the car crying for a long time but eventually went back inside to finish my shopping.” But when she returned, Taylor purchased the exact shirt. “I ended up buying that tank top because, it turns out, I look fierce in it,” she wrote.
The Facebook post where she shared her tale alongside a selfie in the dressing room wearing the red, white, and blue tank, which was posted following the incident on July 3, has since been received with praise, garnering nearly 90,000 likes, 5,000 comments, and 2,500 shares.
While Old Navy’s plus-size section has had its troubles in the past — mainly discriminatory surge prices, and a social media gaffe or two — this situation, while unfortunate and hurtful, at least has a happy ending.
