Photo Series Explores Everyday Lives of Muslim Women in America

Memphis-born, New York–based Photographer Freddie L. Rankin II began his series "The Mystique of Commonality" after a law passed in France banning Muslim women from wearing burqas and hijabs in public places. With a Pentax 35mm camera, Rankin captures the universal similarities of daily life. "We were waiting for the same trains, shopping at the same markets, and swimming at the same beaches," Rankin says in an email. "The Mystique of Commonality" touches on judgment, immigration, acceptance, and most importantly, humanity.
