Peter Dinklage is urging “Game of Thrones” superfans to not buy this one breed of dog
We’ve seen the bond that forms between a boy/girl and their Direwolf in Game of Thrones, and we envy it. How cool would it be to have a giant wolf-like dog at your side during your day-to-day struggles? Very cool! But Game of Thrones star, Peter Dinklage, is urging fans not to buy Huskies, which apparently has become a trend among superfans because they resemble the Stark family Direwolves.
Dinklage joined forces with PETA to raise awareness about increased Husky sales coinciding with the increase of Husky abandonments. The breed requires a lot more care than most pet parents are aware of, thus leading overwhelmed Husky owners to dump their new dog at already overpopulated shelters.

The actor released a statement on Tuesday via PETA asking Game of Thrones fans to refrain from buying Huskies from pet stores and breeders. He said,
“Not only does this hurt all the deserving homeless dogs waiting for a chance at a good home in shelters, but shelters are also reporting that many of these huskies are being abandoned—as often happens when dogs are bought on impulse, without understanding their needs.”

“Please, please, if you’re going to bring a dog into your family,” Dinklage continued, “make sure that you’re prepared for such a tremendous responsibility and remember to always, ALWAYS, adopt from a shelter.”
PETA reports that since Game of Thrones’ 2011 premiere, two Husky-specific rescue groups in Northern California have seen their rescue numbers increase and then double in the last two years. These are tragic statistics to hear knowing that already over six million animals are brought to shelters each year.
Those pets who cannot be placed in a home (which, according to the org, is around half of shelter populations) face euthanasia due to lack of space and supplies.

You don’t need a Direwolf-like breed to experience what it’s like to have a Stark-worthy loyal companion at your side! Any dog you rescue from a shelter will be happy to accompany you, love you, and be the Ghost to your Jon Snow.
