The quest to find the perfect striped shirt is not easy. We all know that the fit and quality are everything, which makes it consequently harder to find. So Nikki Kule, founder and creative director of Kule, set out to do just that — design the perfect striped shirt.

The company was born under a “preppy luxe” ethos, offering her signature striped shirts in three styles: “The Modern,” “The Boyfriend,” and “The Classic.” Each shirt varies slightly in cut, size, and style. Since then, Kule has expanded her business to offer striped sweaters, oxford shirts, and even a few solid-colored shirts, alongside a tightly edited men’s section.

Part of Kule’s success lies in her simple business idea, but it also helps that she has a celebrity fan base in Goop founder and actress Gwyneth Paltrow, Netflix’s Love star Gillian Jacobs, and fashion influencer Olivia Palermo, who have all worn the Kule line.

Nikki Kule earned her “stripes” at the Parsons School of Design in New York and at Parsons Paris. Her first foray into fashion design, interestingly, was in children’s wear, working with star clients such as Cindy Crawford, Reese Witherspoon, Paltrow, and Stella McCartney. This was long before the children’s-wear market became saturated with D2C brands like Rockets of Awesome and boy+girl.

The designer went on to create a boys’ and girls’ collection for Brooks Brothers in 2009, and it wasn’t until two years later that she decided to step away from children’s wear and focus on creating the stripe-focused, adult apparel line she has today.
