Paris Fashion Week Attendees React to Kim Kardashian's Robbery

The only thing that spreads faster than trends in Paris are rumors, and Kim Kardashian’s recent robbery is providing plenty of fuel. Outside Monday morning’s Stella McCartney show, gossip spread like warm Nutella as the fashion pack traded intel. Among the whoppers: Kardashian was gagged (not true), kidnapped from the Peninsula Hotel (nope), and forced to record a ransom video (uh…).

Here’s what we (actually) know: early Monday morning at the Hotel Pourtales, men dressed as police officers held the concierge at gunpoint, handcuffed him, then broke into Kardashian’s suite. The celebrity was locked in the bathroom; thieves escaped with two cellphones and nearly $10 million worth of jewelry. Kanye West stopped his concert in Queens, New York, abruptly when he heard the news.

“I think she’s fine,” W editor in chief Stefano Tonchi was overheard telling colleagues outside of the Paris Opéra, echoing Kardashian’s public statement that she’s “badly shaken but physically unharmed.”

“It’s a horrible and scary thing to happen to anyone,” said Booth Moore, the senior fashion editor of the Hollywood Reporter. “And I don’t think the incident is going to do Paris tourism any favors … but what’s surprising to me is the amount of vitriol she seems to be getting, just by nature of being a very public person.” Example: at the Sacai show, one editor remarked, “That’s what happens when you invite cameras around every time you go shopping for more designer stuff.” (Twitter trolls have been less diplomatic, with comments like “Kim Kardashian robbed at gunpoint … finally some good news.”)

“I think it’ll spur a lot of discussion about whether the cult of celebrity has gone too far,” Moore remarked. “It’s going to become an even bigger story, far beyond just Paris fashion week.”

Kardashian-West left Paris Monday morning on a not-so-secret flight out of town. No word yet on whether her younger sister, Kendall Jenner, will still walk Chanel tomorrow morning, where she’s a favorite of designer Karl Lagerfeld.
