This Nike commercial starring Muslim women athletes wearing hijabs is a must watch
A new commercial from Nike shines a spotlight on Muslim women athletes, and it is seriously inspiring.
The ad from Nike Middle East begins with a woman wearing a hijab (and Nike athletic wear) stepping out of her home to go for a run. At first glance, she seems nervous or apprehensive, but then she takes off running despite shocked glares from passerbys.
The commercial continues in that fashion, featuring women who run, skateboard, ride horses, parkour, box, swim, ice skate, and even ride motorcycles.
Emirati parkour runner Amal Mourad is one of the women featured in the ad. She told Reuters that being a female athlete in her country has been a challenge.
“Convincing my father [to allow me to train] was the toughest part,” she said. “If you want something bad enough you stick to it, and you can get it done.”
The ad sends a clear message that women are powerful forces to be reckoned with. Even if you can’t understand the words, you need to take the time to watch.
