Meet ZEGO, the First Organic, Non-GMO, Gluten-Free Superfood Bar

Yahoo Food is partnering with Barnraiser, a crowd-funding site that helps raise money for farmers and food entrepreneurs. Each week, we feature a project which highlights the mission of Barnraiser: to put a billion dollars into the hands of food innovators as they reshape a healthy food world. This week, Barnraiser is featuring the project of Zego Bars. The San Francisco-based company makes the only organic, superfood bars that are allergy-friendly and gluten free. With your help they can bring three delicious new flavors to market.

ZEGO CEO and co-founder Colleen Kavanagh first found inspiration for ZEGO Bars when her kids’ schools banned nuts, leaving her family and others searching for nutritious, tasty, and clean snacks that their kids with dietary needs (gluten-free, dairy-free, vegan) could bring to school.

The solution? Colleen started ZEGO to make the first organic, non-GMO superfood seed and fruit bars out there. Their bars are designed without common allergenic, highly processed additives or stomach irritating ingredients, but still taste great and are kid-friendly.

ZEGO launched their first two flavors, Chocolate and Sunflower, in their home city of San Francisco two years ago. Since then, they’ve had such fantastic feedback from dedicated snackers, that they’ve designed three new recipes to meet special dietary needs and satisfy the healthy kid in everyone.

Their new flavors have a delightful multi-dimensional texture that they developed by combining poppy, pumpkin, chia, sacha inchi and sunflower seeds to form the base and adding sweetness from dried fruit and sorghum syrup in crowd-pleasing, beloved flavors. And, as always, they carefully analyzed and chose ingredients and suppliers to make sure you’re getting the highest quality snack experience. More textures, more flavors, same Peace of Mind.

Through their Barnraiser campaign, they’re asking for input on recipes and support to fund their production run — everything from sourcing the most superior ingredients and batch testing in their manufacturing facility, to maintaining their high-level Z-Code Food Safety system and using technology to create the most transparent packaging.

ZEGO’s first goal is $10,000 with a stretch goal of $25,000. With your help they can raise enough money to successfully produce all three flavors by December. Plus, ZEGO is committed to bringing better and safer nutrition to kids everywhere. To that end, 5 percent of every purchase is donated to A Better Course (ABC), a nonprofit dedicated to improving nutrition for low-income children both at home and in public programs like school lunch. ABC works on issues that leverage big change, like their work to expose and redirect $2 billion a year was being drained from the national school lunch program.
