Madonna Calls Her Revealing Met Gala Look a ‘Political Statement’

Madonna is an “Unapologetic Bitch.” She says what she wants and wears what she likes. But having the confidence to walk the red carpet at the Met Gala in a sheer lace ensemble has a number of people questioning the singer’s affinity for revealing looks and insisting that it’s time for the 57-year-old to dress more modestly.

At Monday night’s “Manus x Machina: Fashion In an Age of Technology” event, Madonna attended with Givenchy’s Riccardo Tisci, who made her a black thong bodysuit and gown hybrid that flashed both her breasts and her behind. And showing that much skin outraged an array of Twitter users. The comments came in thick and fast, with Piers Morgan even telling the star she should “put it away.” But Madonna isn’t having it.

She has since responded to the negative backlash, explaining that her outfit was a political statement and a chance to advance the feminist cause.

“We have fought and continue to fight for civil rights and gay rights around the world,” she wrote on Instagram. “When it comes to women’s rights we are still in the dark ages. My dress at the Met Ball was a political statement as well as a fashion statement. The fact that people actually believe a woman is not allowed to express her sexuality and be adventurous past a certain age is proof that we still live in an age-ist and sexist society. I have never thought in a limited way and I’m not going to start.”

She continued her caption by encouraging women to stand alongside her, explaining, “By being fearless and by taking the road [less] traveled by. [That’s] how we change history. If you have a problem with the way I dress it is simply a reflection of your prejudice. I’m not afraid to pave the way for all the girls behind me.”

Madonna wasn’t the only Met Gala attendee who received negative backlash for her look — and then fought back. Sarah Jessica Parker was slammed for her unusual ensemble from up-and-coming label Monse. “The 2016 Met Gala Theme was “Manus X Machina; Fashion in the age of technology” and this trio [didn’t] get the memo,” blogger Ivy Marshall shared on Instagram alongside a photo of Parker, Diane von Furstenberg, and Madonna. But Parker defended her outfit choice in the comments section. “Got the memo. Always welcome thoughts but I’m a stickler for the theme and pay close attention to what it means,” she wrote.
