Luxury Communities That Offer Nuclear War Protection Are Now A Thing
Even if you pride yourself on being on top of design and home trends - there's one recent and admittedly surprising trend that you may have missed.
Introducing the newest luxury amenity: Protection against nuclear disaster and other potential causes of apocalypse. (And you thought your wine fridge was nifty.)
A luxury community called Trident Lakes is now under construction just outside Dallas, and is meant to protect residents from disaster with 12-foot walls and watchtowers, access to emergency underground bunkers and a private security force.
It's designed to function self-sufficiently if the rest of the world experiences a nuclear attack, and developers even want to include a private airstrip eventually, according to Curbed.
But don't expect post-acoplyptic doom here. Trident Lakes states the community will be a 700-acre, $320 million project with 600 earth-covered condos (meant to house more than 1,000 people, and estimated to have mid-six-figure prices), an 18-hole golf course, 20-acre blue lagoons with white-sand beaches, jogging trails, sports courts, a 5-star spa, gun ranges, zip lines, polo fields, retail shops and restaurants.
Oh yea, and a fountain that's longer than Bellagio's dancing water lake in Las Vegas. And a row of helipads. And a waterfront wedding venue. Hey, this is Texas. Go big or go home.
"It's a five-star playground with DEFCON 1 preparedness," said Trident Lakes' spokesman and communications director Richie Whitt in a statement. "Our residents will enjoy a piece of paradise and peace of mind."
Yet Texas isn't the only place preparing for potential disaster. Survival company Vivos xPoint is building 575 bomb-resistant bunkers that can sleep up to 20 people each in South Dakota, reports The Daily Mail. In Indiana, similar underground shelters resemble a 4-star hotel with movie theaters and kitchens with stainless steel appliances, and in Germany, the company's bunkers for the super rich come with pools and aquariums.
If you'd prefer to spend your post-apocalypse life in Texas, however, you'll have to be convincing. Prospective residents to Trident Lakes need to be approved, and will be selected based on their ability to contribute to a sustainable community after an emergency. The community, which started after socialites at a Dallas party were discussing their concerns about security, says it will offer special financing to teachers, law enforcement and other civil servants.
