Kelly Osbourne Won’t Be Asking 'What Are You Wearing’ at the VMAs

Kelly Osbourne, a former member of The Fashion Police, has turned in her badge. The correspondent on the lavender carpet at Sunday night’s MTV VMAs, Osbourne revealed she’s bringing along a male companion strictly to ask attendees what they’re wearing — so she doesn’t have to.
“I do agree with what they’ve been saying recently, like, ’Why don’t we ask the women about career achievements and why they’re here tonight instead of just what they’re wearing?’ she said, in regards to the initiative #AskHerMore. “Even though, if you really think about it, that’s what [people] really want to know because they know why they’re there.”
The hashtag took off last awards season — the campaign started in February 2014 — with many stars taking a stand against the sexist questions thrown at them. Jennifer Aniston, Julianne Moore, and Reese Witherspoon went so far as to refuse to walk their fingers down the E!’s mani-cam runway. Jennifer Siebel Newsom, founder and CEO of the Representation Project, the organization behind the hashtag, noted that double standards on the red carpet “obviously perpetuates an unhealthy toxic culture.“
Yet, on the flip side, denying designers a highly-publicized shout-out from a star who’s borrowing one of their expensive dresses can be a blight for business. Additionally, fashion can be empowering for women in its own way. As Osbourne notes, “When you cut back to two years ago when Selena [Gomez] came in the beautiful Versace, no one had seen her in a grown up gown—beautiful and sexy—it gave a whole new layer to Selena.”
The MTV VMAs will take place on Sunday, August 30, 9/8 Central at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles, Calif.
