Jennifer Meyer’s 40th birthday party this weekend welcomed further proof that Hollywood is a mid-size high school. Once you break up with someone, you’re almost guaranteed to see them at the popular girl’s party. No wonder “conscious uncoupling” is so in vogue. It’s survival.
If you’re Katy Perry and Orlando Bloom, though, you call it “taking respectful, loving space,” and you have ample opportunity to practice. They’ve both attended everything from Coachella to Vanity Fair’s own Oscar party in the months since they split. At Meyer’s celebration, which had a guest list that included Gwyneth Paltrow, Jennifer Aniston, Demi Moore, Justin Theroux, and Meyer’s own ex-husband, Tobey Maguire, among others, Bloom and Perry shared at least one chat. Writer Erin Foster captured a tête-à-tête on Instagram stories.
Watch it, here.
A People source described the conversation as “a quick hello and a brief chat.” Calm. Casual. Keeping it short. “They weren’t too friendly and hung out with separate friends at the party,” the source continued. Be civil—not overtly hostile nor overly schmooze-y. Have friendly backup to retreat to should you need it.
Surely he complimented her brand-new hair. Maybe she raised an eyebrow at his sartorial choices at Coachella. Most likely they discussed the care of Perry’s small dog, Butters. He had the pup in hand the following day. Not sure if pet-sitting is a part of the “respectful, loving space” strategy, but everyone is free to put a little twist on the approach.
Vanity Fair has reached out to Perry and Bloom for comment.
