Kate Middleton’s 9 Most Down-to-Earth Moments

Breaking: Kate Middleton flew commercial yesterday on a British Airways flight from the Netherlands to London, blessing every soul on board, even the person behind her whose seat she reclined into (but not too far, of course—she would never). This is just the latest sign that despite the heavenly nature of her hair, the Duchess of Cambridge is, in fact, a mortal, and one who hasn’t been quick to forget that she spent her first 29 years as a commoner. Here, Middleton’s nine most down-to-earth moments.

1. When she did her own royal wedding makeup.

Never mind that she could have gotten Charlotte Tilbury herself, or that regular brides the world over decline to do their own makeup for fear that wedding-day nerves will lead to Donald Trump levels of bronze, Kate went it alone (after reportedly taking lessons from makeup artist Arabella Preston).

2. When she was a regular at the local grocery store.

Nothing to see here: just a real, live princess picking up the basics at supermarket Waitrose in Wales.

3. When she reportedly drove herself to her British Vogue cover shoot.

Sorry, palace chauffeurs, Kate had no problem driving herself to the Norfolk set of her first authorized magazine cover shoot, reportedly arriving with her hair already in rollers. The picture of grace.

4. When she revealed her lifelong dream job: farmer.

On a visit to Cornwall, Kate told a group of young farmers she’d secretly love to join their ranks, urging George and Charlotte to learn about the crops at the royal country home in Norfolk.

5. When she played field hockey with a bunch of children—in 3-inch suede heels.

The former field hockey boss wasn’t too proper to show off her skills at a school visit in 2012. Instead of sitting on the sidelines, she got in on the action, heels be damned.

6. When she deigned to shovel dirt.

The queen of the official groundbreaking ceremony, Kate hasn’t been afraid to soil a perfect mani over the years.

7. When she took her own baby photos.

Professional (and super-twee) newborn photo shoots have become a modern rite of passage for parents. Kate, however, serves as the de facto royal family photographer, snapping, for example, Charlotte’s first-birthday celebration pics.

8. When she wore pants from the Gap.

When she’s not wearing Alexander McQueen and Jenny Packham, Kate goes the high street route, recently reaching for the Gap’s less than $70 printed pants.

9. When she rewears her outfits ad nauseam.

Even when the press endlessly reminds her of the first time, providing helpful side-by-side shots of the first and second wearings, Kate soldiers on. And you thought it was bad to duplicate the same dress during wedding season.
