We all wonder what goes on behind the closed doors of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s (not so humble) abodes. Do they rip off their suits and coat dresses and knock back Pinot as soon as they get home? Do they glue themselves to catch up watching every missed episode of ‘Hollyoaks’ and ‘The Great British Bake Off’? Or do they sit, perfectly poised, in Egyptian cotton bath robes, while servants run in circles around them?

Most of these questions we’ll never know the answer to, but we do now know one more fact about Kate and Wills: The pet name they use for one another.

Turns out that the royal parents aren’t so different from the rest of us and refer to one another as “babe”. It’s not quite as good as “bae”, but shows how normal they really are.

Kate let the cutesy nickname slip while chatting to Aussie TV presenter and landscaper Charlie Albone at the Chelsea Flower Show on Monday.

“I got to meet Prince Will and Prince Harry,” Charlie said. “Prince William was quite funny actually. He came up and said, ‘What [flower] is this one?’ and I replied, ‘That’s a Buxus.’

“Princess Catherine just turned to him and said, ‘Babe, we’ve got those. We’ve got loads of those.”

So there you have it. Babe has the royal seal of approval, just in case you were wondering.
