Kate Hudson's Fabletics Extends Sizing up to 3X

Fitness has always seamlessly fit into Kate Hudson’s life. As a kid, she always played on sports teams and took dance classes. “Fitness for me was always not even about fitness,” Hudson tells SELF. It was, and still is, about moving, feeling good, and having fun.

Hudson cofounded activewear line Fabletics in 2013 with the hopes that other women would see fitness in the same light. The whole brand, she says, is about "getting everyone on board." That goal is now even more attainable with Fabletics' latest announcement: The brand has officially extended its size offerings to include 1X, 2X, and 3X.

Hudson says that while the brand has always wanted to make its apparel available to a wider range of body sizes and shapes, they had to gauge what the demand would be first. And over the past few years, it skyrocketed.

“[Consumers] would say things like, ‘You don’t have it in my size,’” Hudson says. “And we obviously wanted to invest in that because that’s what our whole brand is about, just getting everyone on board.” She says that once they decided about two years ago to offer a broader range of sizes, they started working on developing products to get them just right.

“It’s all the same line—we just extended sizing. It took about a year,” Hudson says. Most of the styles offered by Fabletics are now available in the extended sizes. “We didn’t want to just do it for the sake of doing it, we wanted to make it right and have happy girls.” They tested all the details, like seams and strap thickness, to make sure the products would fit comfortably (and wear well throughout a workout) on a variety of body types.

"When you put something on that makes you feel good, it’s going to make the experience a little bit better," Hudson says. Style and fit are both obviously important, but Hudson hopes her company fosters a community that is supportive and makes fitness feel approachable for more people.

The brand offers a "flexible VIP membership" that includes exclusive access to new patterns at discounted rates; online workouts you can do at home; and discounts with select wellness brands, fitness studios, and wellness retreats. You can also purchase products without a membership at full price.

"As fun as the clothes can be, we want people to lead a healthy lifestyle, and a happy one. And to not feel daunted," Hudson says. "So how do you create an environment that's fun and doesn't feel super daunting for women who are trying to figure out how to do it?" she continues. Her answer: creating an inspiring, motivating, and educational community around fitness—that includes stylish, affordable workout apparel for women of all shapes and sizes.
