Johnny Depp Reportedly Spent $7,000 on This Kardashian Artifact

It was allegedly a present for Depp’s daughter Lily-Rose.

Until Thursday, Johnny Depp and Kim Kardashian existed in entirely different Hollywood spheres. That clear distinction between performers—one a critically acclaimed actor, the other an undeniably savvy businesswoman who capitalized on a lesser art form for family fortune—felt right. It felt safe. It felt necessary. Sure, each entertainer made occasional cameos in the other’s medium—Depp appeared on a 2015 episode of TLC’s Overhaulin’ and Kardashian in Tyler Perry’s 2013 thriller Temptation: Confessions of a Marriage Counselor—but those were in good fun. And there was enough buffer space between projects to keep America’s collective mind from blowing over the proximity of these two Great Cultural Figures. But on Thursday, a legal document shattered that buffer, alleging that Depp is not only aware of Kardashian, but once dropped quite a bit of money for an artifact from her E! reality series.

In the latest chapter of Depp’s legal battle over his lost fortune, his former business managers filed an amended cross-complaint on Thursday, outlining some of the expenses they say Depp still has not reimbursed them for. The alleged purchases: “more than $500,000 in rental fees for storage warehouses that hold his Hollywood collectibles, $17,000 in handbags and luggage at Prada, and $7,000 for a Keeping Up With the Kardashians couch as a gift for his daughter, Lily-Rose.”

Criminally, the complaint does not specify which couch Depp allegedly purchased, which is a problem. Because there have been 13 seasons of Keeping Up with the Kardashians and just as many cast members. Any casual fan of the show has watched the many Kardashians as they sold, acquired, decorated, and re-decorated their homes—each of which, it should be stated, has more than one living room large enough to fit a couch.

There have been white couches, tasteful burgundy couches, couches for teary confessionals, couches for phone calls, couches for “hard talks” and half resolutions, couches for pregnancy scares. There have been office couches, waiting room couches, family meeting couches, prank couches. For all we know, there is a Kardashian couch graveyard in Calabasas—just an airport hangar filled with discarded, Kardashian DNA-dotted couches—and Depp personally toured it, eventually settling on the perfect couch for his daughter’s birthday.

But this allegation is hard to reconcile with Depp’s previous statements about reality stars.

“People get famous now for I-don’t-know-what,” Depp told Interview in 2014. “People have reality shows because they’re a Hollywood socialite, and these things become very successful and they generate a shitload of money for the company. . .And it’s multiplying, to where you’re literally looking into your next door neighbor’s bathroom with reckless abandon. It is like watching a fire. You can’t take your eyes off of it.”

So maybe Depp valiantly purchased the couch to free it from the Kardashian’s clutches and all of those damned camera crews. “Be free,” he might have murmured, giving the couch an affectionate final pat and gesturing towards the sunset with an expensive glass of wine in hand. Wouldn’t that be something? Johnny Depp, savior of sofas, legend among love seats.

Or maybe Depp’s daughter, like most of the world, is simply a fan of the series and Depp, good dad that he is, wanted to surprise her. Maybe someone else with access to the corporate card, a legitimate Keeping Up with the Kardashians fan, purchased the couch. Either way, the Depp-Kardashian couch debacle might remain a mystery—the truth protected by only a few parties, one of which is the couch.

VanityFair.com reached out to Kardashian Jenner communications but has not heard back on this very important subject.
