Will Jay-Z Ever Live Down the Infamous Elevator Incident?

Not if interviewers have anything to say about it.

Though Beyoncé’s Lemonade and, more recently, Jay-Z’s 4:44 addressed the events that led up to his infamous elevator spat with Solange Knowles after the 2014 Met Gala, it doesn’t seem that the rapper will ever be allowed to escape queries about this particular moment. During an interview with Rap Radar podcast, he encountered another question about that fateful night.

“We’ve had one disagreement ever,” the rapper said, referring to the incident. “Before and after, we’ve been cool. She’s like my sister. I will protect her. That’s my sister. Not my sister-in-law. My sister.”

He continued, saying that fights were just a part of family life: “We’ve always had a great relationship. I fought my brothers and argued with my brothers my whole life. It just so happens, who we are, these things go into a different space, but it ain’t nothing.”

The video, which a Standard employee sold to TMZ for $250,000 days after it was filmed, first sparked rumors of controversy in the Carter-Knowles family. The family released a statement on May 16, 2014:

“Jay and Solange each assume their share of responsibility for what has occurred. They both acknowledge their role in this private matter that has played out in the public. They both have apologized to each other and we have moved forward as a united family. The reports of Solange being intoxicated or displaying erratic behavior throughout that evening are simply false. At the end of the day, families have problems and we're no different. We love each other and above all we are family. We’ve put this behind us and hope everyone else will do the same.”

With these quotes, Jay-Z seems to be safely echoing his remarks of three years ago, though an apology album doesn’t hurt much, either.
