Ivanka Trump’s Jewelry Company in Trouble for Unpaid Taxes

Ivanka Trump‘s clothing and accessories label has made headlines in recent weeks as retailers have either dropped or distanced themselves from her wares. The latest controversy surrounding Ivanka’s businesses relates to her fine-jewelry company.

Ivanka Trump Fine Jewelry owes $5,165.06 in unpaid taxes, according to a warrant filed by the New York State Department of State on Jan. 27. The company, which is based in New York City and has fine-jewelry boutiques around the world, is officially listed as Madison Avenue Diamonds LLC on the document.

Despite stepping down from her role with her fashion brand last month, the 35-year-old daughter of President Trump is still listed in business filings as the chief executive officer of her jewelry companies in Florida and New York, according to ProPublica.

The Trump organization told ProPublica that Ivanka formally resigned from “positions of management and authority” on Jan. 18, but the changes haven’t yet been filed. “We are taking steps to update records in the various states and other jurisdictions consistent with governing law,” the company said in a statement.

Coincidentally, Trump posted a photo on Twitter of her with daughter Arabella at the U.S. Supreme Court Building.

This news comes amid the intense media scrutiny that has surrounded the fine-jewelry company as of late. Just weeks ago, high-end retailer Neiman Marcus announced it was dropping Ivanka Trump Fine Jewelry owing to poor sales performance. At the time of the announcement, the company released the following statement to the Cut:

“Neiman Marcus has a very small Ivanka Trump precious jewelry business which is comprised 100 percent of consigned merchandise (merchandise owned by the vendor). Based on productivity we continuously assess whether our brands are carried in stores, on our website, or both.”

Trump’s namesake jewelry line was also in the news when she wore a $10,800, 18-karat yellow gold diamond bangle from the label during her family’s first postelection interview, in New York City.

After the interview, one of the company’s employees sent an email to journalists offering style details on the expensive bangle. That led to a firestorm on social media, with many users commenting that Ivanka’s hawking her products on national television was a conflict of interest. At the time of the incident, the brand’s president, Abigail Klem, said in a statement that a well-intentioned employee, who was still making adjustments postelection, was to blame for the release. “We are proactively discussing new policies and procedures with all of our partners going forward,” said Klem.

The backlash from the event, along with a number of other high-profile incidents in which Ivanka was attacked for sporting her own products, may have led to her stating that she would relinquish her power in her companies.
