Gigi Hadid and Karlie Kloss Star in ‘Teen Mom: Versace Edition’

Versace’s new campaign sees two of America’s most marketable models trying out one very new role: Motherhood. Gigi Hadid, 21, and Karlie Kloss, 23, star in the Bruce Weber-shot ads, each alongside a man and two children — presumably, their partners and kids.

The campaign, which was shot on the streets of Chicago, is intended to bring a certain “grit” to Versace’s brand that the Italian house has been lacking in recent years. Explained Weber to the New York Times, “It’s always funny to me that people think fashion photography is all about showing the clothes. It’s not. It’s about reporting.” (The “reporting” in this case involves the use of several nonmodel men who Weber and Donatella Versace met while out in the city. Other than that, it’s your typical fashion campaign filled with beautiful people and superexpensive clothes. But I digress.)

Putting together imaginary model families for a fashion campaign is nothing new — Dolce & Gabbana has been doing it for eons — but something feels a little off about this one. Like, aren’t these women a little young to have such un-young kids?

I decided to do a deep dive Google the average age of young mothers in the United States. In 2014, the most common age for an American woman to give birth to her first child was just over 26 — and that number keeps going up. Even as far back as 2002, most women in Illinois, specifically, weren’t having their first kid until they were 25.

So let’s get back to pretend moms Hadid and Kloss. I polled my colleagues to see how old they estimated the models’ Versace spawn to be. The general consensus: Hadid’s kids are ages six and two and a half, while Kloss’s chillens are five and four. Meaning that, in Donatella-land, Hadid had her son when she was all of 15 years old!!!! And Kloss had hers at 18.

Can you even imagine the MTV crossover potential? Forget that failed House of Style rebootTeen Mom: Supermodel Edition would be a runaway success.
