Female Athletes We Would’ve Liked to See on the Cover of Vogue Instead of Gigi Hadid

Vogue’s August 2016 cover was revealed on Thursday featuring the interesting pairing of supermodel Gigi Hadid and Olympic decathlete Ashton Eaton. The two make a solid duo, representing the best talents in their own industries, but people are wondering why a female Olympian wasn’t considered for the cover instead. “Wait … were NONE of the THOUSANDS of female athletes competing in Rio available for the @Vogue cover?” Marni K-Hayes asked on Twitter.

While the supermodel had yet to grace the cover of American Vogue, there are plenty of female athletes who could have taken her place. And with the Rio Summer Olympics coming up, it might have been nice to see one of those powerful ladies instead.

Just last night at the ESPYs, WNBA player Breanna Stewart won the award for best female athlete and dedicated her speech to the unequal recognition of females in sports. “Now that I’m in the WNBA, playing with other amazing female athletes, I’m trying to understand why we as professional female athletes don’t receive anywhere near the fame [of men],” she said. “This has to change, and I know that everyone in this room loves and supports women and girls in sports and wants to be a part of that change, right?”

The magazine’s cover story seemingly defends its choice of Hadid by highlighting her relation to Olympic athletes, as well as bringing attention to her own competitive nature. But why use an “athletic” model when you can just use an athlete instead?

Here are some of the female Olympians we would have wanted to see on the cover.
