Fast Food, Fast Fashion: You Love the Big Mac, But Would You Wear It?

Yesterday McDonalds celebrated “#Imlovinin24,” a self-proclaimed holiday on which the restaurant’s marketing teams in 24 cities did crazy stuff in 24 hours. It was also March 24 (and, while we’re on it, the 31 anniversary of the day The Breakfast Club went into detention). The point is, they decided they would be “lovin’” that day, so they did crazy things like build a coffee-cup-shaped ball pit in Australia and stage a Bic Mac-themed fashion show in Sweden.

The “McWalk” collection, which features bedding, thermal underwear, rain boots, and even a doggie coat can be purchased online. Or you know, you can go to any other weird corner of the Internet populated by teenagers who have been designing tees, socks, hoodies, and other items emblazoned with food images. A cursory Internet search will show you where to buy a taco backpack, a pizza sweatshirt, or even French fry socks.

Burger-couture comes hot on the tails of Pizza Hut’s Valentine’s Day campaign, which produced a small line of nail polish with colors like “Dough You Need Me,” a light crème color, and “Meat Me After Midnight,” a pink-taupe-y color that you honestly hope does not reflect the color of any meat that you may ever eat. The colors were also perfect for doing pizza nail art, an important way to express your love for pizza, albeit a subtle one.

The celebration of the foods we eat, especially the junky ones – no one wants a a pair of kale-printed leggings –has been snowballing for years now: it was the subject of articles on The Hairpin, where the term #Snackwave was coined, and The New York Times, and counts Miley Cyrus among its fans. She loves to post photoshopped pizza images on her Instagram, while America’s queen, aka Beyonce, has stepped out in a pepperoni pizza-printed sweat suit. It’s surprising that it took marketing execs this long to get on the trend. Unfortunately for McDonalds’, in the world of #Snackwave, Pizza is still king.
