Fall in Love With Altuzarra’s Prefall Collection

It’s not even winter in New York City, but fashion’s already thinking ahead to next fall, or pre-fall, that is. But what is pre-fall? And why should anyone care? Designer Joseph Altuzarra, who showed his latest collection on Tuesday morning, says that pre-fall “is basically season-less. [It] arrives at the beginning of the summer and can be worn until now.” A collection you can wear for a whopping six months without the fashion community throwing shade? Count me in! Especially if it’s Altuzarra. Let’s be honest, the man makes clothes that make women want to throw down their credit card. Here’s how he does it:

The collection felt just as much 1930s as it did 1990s. From polka dots to cricket stripes, Altuzarra’s shapes and prints were inspired by the ‘30s. The resulting dreamy dresses, however, feel entirely fresh.

Inspired by the way the giant polka dots were used in the ‘30s and then again in the ‘60s, Altuzarra turned the classic shape into giant paillettes, sewing them onto a black skirt or a crochet shirt for a more modern feel.

His 60s shaped coats are lightweight enough to go from early summer to late fall.

Altuzarra also showed his so-called “shadow capsule,” a stretchy, wrinkle-free wardrobe that’s mix and matchable and travels well. (His zipper have a longer piece of fabric attached, making it extra easy to slip in and out of your top or dress without the help of a partner!)

Again looking to the ‘30s, Altuzarra considered shapes from that decade, worked in embroidery techniques from the 60s and 90s, and produced party dresses so pretty you’ll want to wear them around the house.

By incorporating the paillettes into the collar of this coat, the designer created an almost feathered-like look.

An evening dress straight from the ‘30s with a very ‘60s color palette, this gown was the highlight of the collection.
