Eating My Way Through Milan Fashion Week

Milan fashion week is all about the clothes, the glamour, the celebrities, sure, but it’s also about booze and tiny hors d’oeuvres passed around by ridiculously good-looking men in tuxedos. I am thankful for these hors d’oeuvres (and these men) because on days where Dora, our Market Director, and I ran around from appointment to appointment without any free time to get lunch, I survived on these tiny pieces of food. They were my very fancy sustenance.

Sure, #fashionpeople will not eat the tiny hors d’oeuvres, but I am not #fashionpeople. You give me a snack, and I will eat it. You give me a fancy snack, and I will eat it twice. Eventually, the waiters learned to make a beeline for me and after saying something like, “Well, if you insist!”, I grab one and eat it. Even though we don’t speak the same language, they know this is a funny thing I just said, because they are not insisting, and they laugh too. It’s all very charming and laid-back—very Italian. Here’s a culinary tour of everything I ate at fashion presentations in Milan from February 26 to March 1.

Apple sausage pigs in a blanket
A little piece of toast with goat cheese, tomato, and caviar.
Mini-profiteroles.
A glass of freshly squeezed orange juice.
Tiny bagels with cream cheese and salmon.
A delicious ham and egg bite that was like if a croque monsieur and a quiche had a baby.
Tiny piece of bread with cheese and prosciutto.
A little sponge cake with apricot jam in the middle.
A cube of parmesan cheese with a drop of balsamic vinegar.
A little glass filled with minuscule cubed fruit salad, eaten with an appropriately tiny spoon.
A mini chocolate tarte with whipped cream and a berry on top.
The most delicious lemon shortbread cookies.
A bite of sweet potato and roast beef with a bit of pineapple on top.
A sushi roll of sea bass and a fruit. Possibly a grape?
A glass of freshly squeezed grapefruit juice.
A minuscule plate with three bites of risotto and mashed purple potato with a drizzle of olive oil, eaten with a tiny fork.

A special shout-out goes to the fine folk at Max Mara, who so kindly provided us with a lunchbox, yes, an actual lunchbox, with a prosciutto and cheese panini, an apple, a pear juice box, and a little brownie. You are forever in my heart.
