Do Stars Like Emma Watson Employ Someone to Hold Their Trains?

When you’re an A-lister trying to wow on the red carpet, a magnificent train is the way to go. Expect to see quite a few on Sunday at the Oscars.

Case in point: Emma Watson, the star of the upcoming Disney live-action fable Beauty and the Beast. For the London premiere of the film, she wore a glorious, custom Emilia Wickstead Cinderella dress made using sustainable fabrics. And it had a train. Not Amtrak. Think more like the Orient Express. And naturally, Watson needed help maneuvering it around the carpet.

Who gets those honors? No, celebrities don’t have personal train handlers. That job falls, for the most part, to assistants and publicists. Rooney Mara’s rep handled her skirt at the 2012 Oscars, while in the case of Ariel Winter at the 2015 SAG Awards, that task fell to her Modern Family co-star, Jesse Tyler Ferguson.

Not all stars can take their publicists with them to the crowded carpets of some awards shows, and once inside, they’re often their own. Witness Lily Collins in her voluminous Zuhair Murad gown at the Golden Globes, which made carrying a clutch quite a challenge.

Costume designer Frank Fleming, who styles Keri Russell, says there are a few tricks to keeping a train in its place.

“You can put a weight on the train, sewn into the edge of it, so it’s grounded and doesn’t move around,” he tells Yahoo Style. “Personally, I try to shorten it so there’s enough length so you have it, but you can still manage to walk without stepping on it. The actress has to be aware of it.”

In many cases, though, he says, “A publicist walks behind you to straighten it out. And on red carpets, you have to be careful because someone can step on it, so you have to be mindful of it.”
