Did Rebel Wilson Just Start a War With Victoria’s Secret?

Rebel Wilson might have looked chic in a black and hot pink cape dress on the blue carpet at the MTV Movie Awards, but it was what she wore to present onstage that really made a statement.

On Sunday, the actress, who was on-hand to share a clip from her upcoming film Pitch Perfect 2, made a change into leather leggings, a beaded bra with hanging fringe, large white angel wings, and black winged sneakers. Bedazzled in crystals on the butt of her pants were big block letters with the word “THINK.” Now, if it wasn’t already obvious that Wilson was channeling a Victoria’s Secret model (the brand’s bottoms often feature the world “pink” on them), she proceeded to say, “At least we can all take comfort in the fact that my look’s more like a neat burrito rather than a stand and stuff taco.”

The actress, who has historically been self-deprecating and positive about her own non-sample size, has always encouraged other women to accept themselves in the same way that she has, even going so far as to confidently play a character named Fat Amy. In the press room post-show, she further explained the look. "The Bella girls [in Pitch Perfect] are all different shapes and sizes and nationalities. I think one of the good messages in the movie is that you’re all beautiful. Sometimes girls will look at Victoria’s Secret models and think they have to model themselves after that, but I really don’t think that’s the best,” she said. “Even though they’re called models, they’re not the best people to model themselves after. I’d like to encourage other girls to think that way, which is why I put that on my butt. Because it’s really about what’s up here [pointing to her head] and not what’s here [then pointing to her butt].“

With this ensemble, which was personally made for her by Shady Zeineldine, a Dubai-based designer who has also made corsets for Madonna and Lady Gaga, Wilson seems to be publicly siding with the many other companies and people that have recently stoop up to the lingerie shop for pushing poor body standards. Lane Bryant recently released an ad campaign taking a dig at its competitor with #ImNoAngel featuring all differently-sized models Ashley Graham, Marquita Pring,Candice Huffine, Victoria Lee, Justine Legaultand, and Elly Mayday. A Change.org petition got so many signatures it actually made a change to a Victoria’s Secret ad.

What the fight for a shift in body standards has really needed is a face to lead the major change in how women are talked about and treated in the media and beyond. Wilson’s stunt seems to put her in the forefront. As has been said, the revolution will be televised — and that’s exactly what Wilson did.
