•
Asked at the Fashion Awards 2016 by the Press Association whether or not he’d dress Melania Trump, Jean Paul Gaultier said that the future first lady dresses well on her own and he has nothing “bad to say against her.” He added, “She was better dressed than Hillary [Clinton] when she went to vote. She was in her camel coat and white dress and was beautiful. I don’t know who advises her or maybe it’s herself, but if she asked me to dress her, why not?”

Calvin Klein on Dressing Melania Trump: ‘Of Course I Would'

With Melania Trump as first lady, the fashion industry is dealing with a dilemma: respect the position or take a stand based on personal politics.

Sophie Theallet was the first to take sides and start the conversation. "As one who celebrates and strives for diversity, individual freedom, and respect for all lifestyles, I will not participate in dressing or associating in any way with the next First Lady," she wrote in an open letter that she shared on Twitter. "The rhetoric of racism, sexism, and xenophobia unleashed by her husband's presidential campaign are incompatible with the shared values we live by. I encourage my fellow designers to do the same."

Yet while Theallet’s words resonated with some, not all are on the same page. Click through the photos above to find out how designers, including Jean Paul Gaultier, Tom Ford, Tommy Hilfiger, and more, are feeling about the future FLOTUS.
