Inside the Met: Elizabeth Banks, Ansel Elgort & Diane Kruger Talk China
After guests made their way up the red carpet, into the museum, and through the receiving line, they had to wind their way through the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s latest exhibition, China: Through the Looking Glass, before they hit the bar. Ansel Elgort was the first to arrive. “I’m wearing Tom Ford…and I think it kind of chooses you? I’m lucky he chose me,” he said of his tuxedo. “Larry David is here, you should interview him, he’s much cooler than me.”
In truth, everyone was cooler than the person before. After all, Anna Wintour’s Met gala is the party of the year. From Beyonce to George Clooney, Rihanna to Madonna, everyone who is anyone turned out in their finest interpretation of Chinese influence. “I was inspired by Marlene Dietrich’s costume in Shanghai Express,” designer Joseph Altuzarra said of the feathered gown he made for Kerri Russell.
“It’s supposed to be like a ‘40s movie star,” Georgia May Jagger said of the purple-based kimono she wore, designed by Gucci’s new designer, Alessandro Michele. “I’ve got rings on every finger, my shoes have pompoms. His style’s really similar to mine, just kind of quirky.”
Elizabeth Banks eschewed the theme, in a turquoise blue dress by Michael Kors. “I felt like a lot of people would wear red and I just thought that this was the color to go with,” she said. “It’s jersey, so it’s very comfortable. Other than the fact that I’m waiting for a nipple to fall out.”
