Is Chris Christie Headed to Dancing with the Stars?

He’s out of the running for the sports radio show.

There was a time, not too long ago, when New Jersey Governor Chris Christie appeared to be in line for a gig in the Trump administration, but no amount of fetching the candidate McDonald’s secured him the coveted vice-presidential slot. After the election he went on to head Trump’s transition team, fueling speculation that he might be in line for another consolation prize—perhaps attorney general, or a job with the Republican National Convention. For a brief, shining moment, it really looked as though the errand-boy routine had paid off and the sky was the limit, even with the whole Bridgegate scandal hanging over his head. But sadly for Christie, it was not meant to be: he was ousted from Team Trump, replaced on the transition by Mike Pence, and given a one-way ticket back to the Garden State. There, for the last nine months, he’s been spending his remaining days as governor closing beaches to residents so his family can have the entire Jersey Shore for themselves and watching his approval rate plummet.

Still, there’s been one bright spot for Christie: filling in as a sports radio host on WFAN, where he’s been able to put his unique talent for antagonizing the people of New Jersey to good use. (In July, he called one caller, “Mike from Montclair,” a “Communist” and a “bum.”) In fact, Christie has done such a great job that he was reportedly in contention, among others, to take over for Mike Francesa next year. Sadly, a Saturday report from the Daily News noted that the governor was no longer in the running, though if you’re thinking the network cut him loose, you are sorely mistaken. According to a statement put out by Christie, this was not another case of being cast aside:

“After considering the other options that I have been presented with for post-gubernatorial employment, I declined their request to do additional shows. I made station executives aware that while I would be happy to continue to fill in for Boomer when asked and when available, that they should no longer consider me as a candidate interested in any job at WFAN when I leave the governorship. I made that clear to them prior to leaving for my family vacation two weeks ago.”

What options Christie might have been presented are unclear. As The Record notes, Christie is “prohibited from negotiating future employment while still in office.” Obviously, we’re hoping it’s the one that nearly all politicians in this day and age are offered and that, so far, only Rick Perry has accepted: a role on Dancing with the Stars.
